Keep Your Specs Spic And Span With These Simple Tips

You may be one of those people who regularly loses, breaks or drops their glasses but with this simple guide, it is easy to ensure your frames are well-protected and in great condition. They may feel sturdy, but most glasses require a gentle touch when cleaned and stored.

When buying a pair of glasses, there are certain features you can look out for to make them last longer. For example, polycarbonate lenses are the most common lens material and offer durability and a lightweight strength. Similarly, flexible hinges mean your frames will work with you and offer impact-resistant endurance.

However, for everyday maintenance, it is important that you understand how to clean and maintain your favourite frames. Scratches, peeling coatings and discolouration can all affect the performance of your prescription lenses, which may result in eye strain or compromised vision. Follow these simple tips to keep your glasses looking great.

Cleaning tips

When you buy a pair of glasses, you will normally be provided with a soft microfibre cleaning cloth. These are ideal for gently rubbing away greasy marks on the lenses.

Some people use methylated spirits to clean their glasses by applying a small amount to a slightly dampened cloth before cleaning the lens. However, methylated spirits are not recommended for use on polycarbonate/plastic glasses as it can damage the lens surface.

Though it may be tempting to use a ‘wet wipe’ or soap to clean your glasses, it is important to avoid any harsh spirits or chemicals which could cause damage to the lens.

If your glasses come with nose pads, clean these carefully with a cotton bud soaked in lens cleaning solution for stubborn dirt or discolouration.
When cleaning your glasses, choose your cleaning cloth carefully. The cloths provided with glasses are normally soft and gentle. Avoid using sponges, towelling, or toilet paper because these can scratch the delicate surface of the lens.

Keep them safe!

Unlike a car windscreen, scratches cannot be polished out of lenses. Try choosing an anti-scratch coating when ordering your glasses. If you do find a scratch, a reglazing service will replace the lenses in your existing frames, normally at an affordable price.
When glasses lie buried at the bottom of a handbag or in pockets, they are vulnerable to being crushed or bent. Invest in a quality glasses case, preferably a hard case as the soft, zip-up alternatives only protect your glasses from surface scratches.

Wear and remove them correctly

If you are concerned that your glasses do not fit properly, consult your local optician who should be able to make adjustments for you. It is important that your frames fit your face comfortable to prevent them from slipping or falling off and becoming damaged. When removing your glasses, be sure to use both hands and gently tug at both arms because using one hand may, over time, cause the frame shape to distort.  Similarly, try not to place your glasses or sunglasses on your head because this can widen the arms, making them looser when you need to wear them again.
